Polio Free India...

Finally, good news on the health front   !!!

Next year will be crucial for India's polio eradication programme, which appears on track with only one case reported so far this year.

According to an article in the recent issue of the journal by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: " If no wild polio virus is identified throughout the high-transmission season in 2012, India will be regarded as polio-free."

According to experts, this would put the World Health Organisation South-East Asia Region, of which India is a member, on track to be certified polio-free as early as 2014.

HURDLES AHEAD :-

However, the article says that despite the absence of WPV cases in India since January 2011, the risk remains for WPV circulation among migrant populations and residents of high-risk areas in western Uttar Pradesh and central Bihar and in migrant populations in other states.

"In West Bengal, families within certain migrant populations continue to have higher proportions of undervaccinated children than families in migrant populations and the general population aged less than two years in other states," it said.

Experts say even as India has served as a reservoir for importation to neighbouring countries and some distant countries, the country also is at risk for WPV importations from other polio-affected areas. "The recent polio outbreak in neighbouring China resulting from WPV importation from Pakistan is a reminder of the need for continued vigilance to ensure high population immunity in all states (with specific focus on migrant populations)," it added further.

Lauding its efforts on eradication of polio, experts said that " elimination of WPV in India will establish that WPV transmission can be interrupted even in the most challenging of settings."

The report on the status of India's polio fight was found mention in this week's issue of the journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, which is published by the US Centers for Disease Control.

The last reported case of polio in India was recorded in mid-January, a more than nine-month polio-free stretch that the report calls 'unprecedented'. In 2010, there were 40 cases of polio in India from January to the end of October.

The report notes that in addition to the lack of new cases, a programme that looks for polio viruses in sewage in three key areas of the country isn't spotting viruses either. The sewage surveillance is considered an early warning system.

When polio viruses are found to be circulating in sewage, cases of paralytic polio often follow. "Viruses were last seen in the sewers of New Delhi in August 2010 and in the sewers of Mumbai in November of last year," it said.

So Friends, we are close to achieving our goal for the Polio free India, atleast.

Let's not stop here and be ready and vigilant.

Rotary Regards,

Polio Funding Statistics 2010-12

Friends,
It is important that we should know the facts and figures as to why we as Rotarians should donate for Polio Challenge...?
Also some people spread misconceptions that Rotarians don't contribute much for Polio except manning booths or organizing rallies.

Here are some Polio Funding Statistics 2010-12.
FUNDING FROM DONORS: (USD 1.3 billion)

G8 (USA. UK, Germany etc) 30%
Pvt (Rotary, Gates, etc) 16%
Govts (India, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia etc) 36%
Public Sector (WB, WHO, UN, ECC etc) 16%
Non G8 (Australia, Sweden, Norway etc) 02%
Total 100%

FUNDS REQUIRED FOR POLIO ERADICATION is $2.6 billion,

while the contributions total $1.3 billion.

HENCE SHORTFALL IS $1.3 BILLION (50%) for 2010/2012

For 2010/2012, 56% of all costs are for 4 Endemic Countries. 50% of that goes to India, ie. 28% of all entire Polio Eradication budget goes to India. Out of $2.6 billion required for 2010/2012, $728 million will come to India.

USA leads in contributions with over $1.8 billion to date (1985 to 2012) followed by India $1.1 billion, Rotary TRF $1.0 billion, UK $900 million and Gates Foundation $850 million.
Source: Global Polio Eradication Initiative (2010/2012)

Each national immunisation day in India involves:
225,000,000 doses of polio vaccine
2,000,000 vaccine carriers
6,300,000 icepacks
2,500,000 vaccinators
1,170,000 vaccination teams
155,000 supervisors, in 155,000 vehicles
709,000 vaccination booths
174,000,000 children immunized

Further Pls note that Rotary International has taken a pledge to make world polio free. No other organisation in the world had made such a commitment ever for any cause.

It is therefore paramount for us Rotarians to not only support this great cause but contribute towards its eradication, as well.

Why Join Rotary Club.... ?

The first question that many people ask, when suggested to be a member of a rotary club is : "Why Join Rotary Club?"
If you haven't than here are some of the reasons for-

WHY Join ROTARY club :-

It is important for us that each of our member is well aware of the benefits.

There are many reasons to join a local Rotary club:

Friendship :-

Rotary was founded on fellowship, a cornerstone that continues to attract members today. Rotarians enjoy camaraderie with like-minded professionals, and club projects provide opportunities to develop enduring friendships. Club members who travel have friendly contacts in almost every city of the world.

Service:-

Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and internationally. Service programs address concerns such as health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment. Rotarians regularly experience the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.

Networking:-

An original goal of Rotary was to allow club members to meet periodically and enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances. As members of the oldest service club in the world, Rotarians represent a cross-section of their community's business owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy.

Family :-

Rotary sponsors some of the world's largest exchange and educational programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training opportunities and mentoring for young leaders, and they involve family members in a wide range of social and service activities.

Leadership:-

Rotary is an organization of successful professionals. Team-building, fundraising, public speaking, planning, organization, and communication are just some of the leadership skills that club members can exercise and enhance. Being a Rotary leader provides further experience in motivating, inspiring, and guiding others.

Ethics :-

Encouraging high ethical standards and respect for all worthy vocations has been a hallmark of Rotary from its earliest days. In their business and professional lives, Rotarians abide by The Four-Way Test:

Of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

So look at the reasons for your Joining Our club and act in earnest.

Ron D. Burton is chosen as the 2013-14 RI president

Ron D. Burton, a member of the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2013-14. Burton will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates. Burton retired as president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc. in 2007. He is a member of the American Bar Association, as well as the bar associations of Cleveland County and the state of Oklahoma. He is admitted to practice in Oklahoma and before the U.S. Supreme Court.

"This is an exciting time to be a Rotarian," Burton says. "I believe we are well poised to capitalize on our strengths as we embrace the [RI] Strategic Plan and the Future Vision Plan. My vision is to have every Rotarian appreciate what it means to be a Rotarian. With these two tools, we can make that happen."

Active in his community, Burton is a founder and past president of the Norman Public School Foundation, and founder and past board member of the Norman Community Foundation. A recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, he is a past vice president of the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Burton believes that Rotary's promotion of high ethical standards is one of the qualities that sets it apart from other organizations.

"It assures those dealing with us that we can be trusted," he says. "Most of us are in a business or profession that already has a code of ethics. Vocational service in Rotary just adds to that responsibility. We have an obligation to go above and beyond to make sure that all our actions are above reproach."

A Rotarian since 1979, Burton is vice chair of the Future Vision Committee and a member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for the United States. He has served RI as director; Rotary Foundation trustee and trustee vice chair; International Assembly moderator, assistant moderator, and group discussion leader; and district governor.

His other service to Rotary includes chair of the 2011 New Orleans Convention Committee, vice chair of the Investment Advisory Committee, liaison trustee of the Vocational Service Committee, Permanent Fund national adviser, and regional Rotary Foundation coordinator. He was aide to 2006-07 RI President William B. Boyd.

Burton has received the RI Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service Award, and International Service Award for a Polio-Free World.

Burton and his wife, Jetta, have two children and three grandchildren.

R.I. President's Monthly message - August, 2011

RI President's Monthly message - August, 2011

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,

There is an old saying in India: "When you help your neighbor's boat across the water, you find that your own has reached the shore." By helping others, we often find that we have helped ourselves as well.

Each of us came to Rotary to serve – and found the joys and satisfactions of friendship and fellowship. In August, the month we dedicate to membership and development, we focus on spreading the message of Rotary. By serving well, without hiding our Rotary light under the proverbial bushel, we find ourselves closer to our own goal: a stronger, more vibrant Rotary for generations to come.

Public image and membership go hand in hand. Too many people – intelligent, educated, involved people – simply have no idea what Rotary is. This is something we need to confront. We have heard again and again about communities where, despite all the good work that Rotary clubs do, many people are unaware that those clubs even exist. This is not the way forward for our organization.

Serving well is the essential first step – but it is only the beginning. We have to raise our profile with all the tools that are available to us, and there are more tools today than there ever were. We have to use social media such as Twitter and Facebook, and we have to be sure our clubs have an online presence. Having a website is not enough; it must be up to date, it must be appealing, it must reflect the work we are doing. And it must offer a way for prospective members, once they see what we do and become interested, to take the next step.

Rotary has so much to offer. It is up to us to let others know what a fantastic organization we have, and to show people how they can integrate Rotary into their lives. Service does require time, and time is something nobody has enough of these days. So we need to ensure that all the time we spend with Rotary is worthwhile – that it is rewarding and never wasted. When we reach within ourselves and our clubs, when we learn what we are capable of and harness that power, we will elevate our communities as never before – and elevate Rotary as well.

President, Rotary International

Message from R.I. President - Rtn. Kalyan Banerjee

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary!

All of us in Rotary are looking to change the world – why else would we be Rotarians? We believe that our world can be happier, healthier, and more peaceful, and that we can create that better world through our service.

In 2011-12, I will ask Rotarians to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity . I will ask you to search first within yourselves, to understand that all of us, everywhere, have the same dreams, the same hopes, the same aspirations, and similar dilemmas. When we understand, and truly feel, that others' needs are the same as our own, we begin to understand how important our work is. In the year ahead, we will have three emphases in our Rotary service.

Our first emphasis in this Rotary year will be the family. The family and the home are at the core of all our work – all our service begins here. And through the family, we approach all of our community and indeed, all of humanity, as an extended family, in which all members care for each other. In times of joy and in times of need, no one is ever alone.

Our second emphasis will be continuity – finding the things we do well and taking them to the next level. We must build on our successes, expand on them, and strive to do even more. Of course, our greatest obligation is to PolioPlus, where success is now so close.

And our third emphasis will be change. We must understand that true change can only begin with each of us, and start within us. We cannot share peace with others if we do not have it to give. We cannot look after the whole world without first looking after those closest to us: our families, our clubs, and our communities.

Mohandas K. Gandhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." In Rotary, we endeavor to live ethically and honestly, to share friendship and fellowship, to see equal worth in every human being. We are not interested in the lowest common denominator, for Rotary is anything but common. Instead, we work to elevate ourselves, elevate others, and thereby embrace the world.

Together, we will Reach Within to Embrace Humanity . And in peace, harmony, and friendship, we will bring change – and a more joyful world.

Kalyan Banerjee
President, Rotary International
